Evening routine checklist: 20 small steps to close the day

The short answer

A good evening routine is a short list of small steps that close the day: tidy one surface, put the phone on its charger, choose tomorrow’s first step and write one line. Do them at a time you already stop, like right after the last dish, and keep it that small for a week.

In 30 seconds

  • Choose steps by the minutes you really have tonight.
  • Start with five boxes. Add a sixth after a week.
  • Pick tomorrow’s first step before bed and write it down.
  • On a wrecked night, tick one box and stop.

The dishes are in the sink. Tomorrow’s lunch is still an idea. And the phone you swore you’d put down is showing you this.

Any of those three can start the night. The other two can wait, which is more or less the whole idea.

Full disclosure: we make an iPhone app for small steps. An envelope works too.

What an evening routine is for

An evening routine is a few small things you do in the same order before bed, so the day has an ending.

Its job is small: put today away and leave tomorrow one clear first step. A clear counter and one written line can manage that.

So how small is small? Small enough for the night you got home late, ate standing up and found the laundry still damp in the machine. Fit that night, and you’ll fit the rest.

Tonight’s five boxes

Ticks stay in this browser. Nothing is sent.

Five boxes, about 7 minutes in total. Print it, or copy it onto a card for the fridge door.

Plan the routine for your most tired weeknight.

It’s the same thinking behind our 30 day challenge ideas: one small step a day, for a month, instead of one huge evening of good intentions.

20 evening routine ideas by minutes

Pick by minutes, not mood. In the evening, mood votes for the couch every time.

Evening steps and a ready goal for each
StepMinutesReady goal

Read 2 pages5Read
Write one line about today1Gratitude, or the journal alone
Send a short hello2Call family or friends
Lay out tomorrow’s clothes2Your own goal

The minutes are rough. One pan from Sunday can turn a 10-minute sink into 25.

Here are 12 more, grouped by how long they take, each with the goal it fits.

If you have 2 minutes

  • Put keys, bag and work badge by the door (Your own goal)
  • Stretch on the floor for 2 minutes (Stretch or yoga)
  • Take 1 breather by an open window (Take breathers)
  • Wind down for 2 minutes: lights low, no new tabs (Sleep on time)

If you have 5 minutes

  • Move the laundry from the chair back into the cupboard (Tidy up)
  • Practise a language for 5 minutes (Learn a language)
  • Draw for 5 minutes, badly and on purpose (Draw or create)
  • Skip one small buy and close the shopping tab (No-spend days)

If you have 10 minutes

  • Put the phone in a drawer for 10 minutes (Less phone time)
  • Call someone instead of texting them (Call family or friends)
  • Make tomorrow’s lunch (Cook at home)
  • Practise an instrument for 10 minutes (Practise an instrument)

Twenty is a menu, so pick one or two. A routine with 20 steps is a second job.

The goal names in that table come from Yumemira, the small-steps journal for iPhone. Each is a ready goal for small evening steps.

Every goal has a daily step and a smaller busy-day step. So Tidy up shrinks to 2 minutes on a long night.

When the step’s done, tap Mark done and Mira, the app’s star, cheers “Nice. That counts.”

On paper, a tick in the box does the same job, minus the cheering.

Set tomorrow up tonight

The most useful box on the list is the one about tomorrow. Choose tomorrow’s first step and write it where you’ll see it before breakfast.

Keep it one sentence long: “Walk for 5 minutes after breakfast” or “Reply to the landlord before lunch.”

A decision made tonight, with the counter clear and the bag already by the door, is one the morning won’t have to make while you’re hunting for the other shoe.

Small, but it adds up.

But don’t plan the whole morning. One step’s enough.

If mornings are the hard part, the morning routine ideas post sorts 40 small steps by the minutes you have. And when you’d like a question for each end of the day, try these morning and night journal prompts.

Write one line before bed

The last box is a line about today. Write it after the other boxes, so there’s something fresh to write about.

Do one small thing, then write a line about it. It’s hard to have nothing to say about a sink you cleared ten minutes ago.

A small step, then a line about it
After this stepA line it might get
Tidy one surface“Cleared the desk. Found three pens and a receipt.”
Send a short hello“Texted my brother. He sent a photo of his dog.”
Read 2 pages“Two pages. The detective walked right past the umbrella.”
Phone in a drawer“Ten minutes without the phone. Heard the fridge hum.”
Glass of water by the bed“Water’s by the bed. That’s the plan for tonight.”

Write the line after the step, while it’s still fresh.

In Yumemira, after Mark done, a button says Say how it went. Tap it, answer “How did it go?” in a line, and the entry sits next to the step it’s about.

Yumemira Journal tab on iPhone: a 7:10 pm entry, "Slow, but I did not stop," with an Okay face and a Step done tag.
An evening entry, tagged Step done.

If you’d like your evening lines next to your steps, try it in Yumemira. If you’d rather keep a notebook, one line before bed works on paper exactly the same way.

Can’t make nights work at all? Write at another time. The best time to journal is the one tied to a cue you already have.

The dishes can be tomorrow’s first step. Write it down, then put the phone on its charger.

This page will still be here tomorrow night.

Questions people ask

What is a good evening routine?

A few small steps, done in the same order at a time you already stop. Tidy one surface, charge the phone away from the bed, choose tomorrow’s first step and write one line about today.

What should be on an evening routine checklist?

Five boxes makes a fair start: tidy one surface, put the phone on its charger, set a glass of water by the bed, write down tomorrow’s first step and write one line about today. Add a sixth only after a week.

What is a simple evening routine for adults?

Pick two steps that take under 5 minutes together, like clearing the counter and writing tomorrow’s first step on a note. Do them right after the last dish or the last episode, every night, for one week.

How long should an evening routine take?

Not long. The steps here take 1 to 10 minutes each, and the five-box checklist takes about 7. A longer routine is fine on a free evening, but plan the everyday version around your most tired night.
