Morning routines
Morning routine ideas: 40 small steps you can start tomorrow

The short answer
Good morning routine ideas fit the minutes you really have: 2 minutes for a glass of water and open curtains, 5 for a short walk, 10 for a few pages of a book. Pick one step, do it right after something you already do every morning, and keep it that size until the same weekday comes round again.
In 30 seconds
- Choose ideas by the minutes you have on a normal weekday.
- Start with one step. Add a second one after a week.
- Tie the step to something you already do, like the first coffee.
- Set it up the night before, so the morning has less to decide.
The internet’s morning routine starts at 4:30 with a cold plunge. Yours starts when the dog decides, or the baby, or the bus.
So the 40 ideas below are sorted by the minutes you actually have.
One thing to know first: we make an iPhone app for small daily steps, so we’re hoping you’ll try it.
Chalk marks on the fridge door count mornings just as well.

How to pick morning routine ideas you’ll keep
Start with your worst weekday morning. It’s the one where the keys are missing and breakfast happens standing up at the counter, while the radio talks to nobody in particular.
Plan for that one. Whatever fits it’ll fit the others too.
| Minutes | Three small steps | A ready goal | Busy-day size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Glass of water, open curtains, stretch | Stretch or yoga | Stretch for 2 minutes |
| 5 | Walk to the corner, read 2 pages, write one line | Walk | Walk for 5 minutes |
| 10 | Tidy one surface, read 10 pages, take a breather | Read | Read 2 pages |
| 20 | Walk, language practice, cook breakfast | Learn a language | Practise for 2 minutes |
| 30 | Run, a study block, a longer walk | Run | Run for 10 minutes |
The last column is what most lists skip. The app’s ready goals with a busy-day step each come with a smaller version, and on a bad morning, that’s the routine.
Choose the step that fits your worst weekday.
Pick one step and keep it for a week. If it’s still feeling small on day 7, add a second one.
A month of this is a small 30 day challenge, and that’s a fine way to think about it.
2-minute morning steps
These fit between the alarm and the first cup. You don’t have to be properly awake for any of them, and few of us are.
If you have 2 minutes
- Drink one glass of water before the coffee.
- Open the curtains and check the weather you’ll be dressing for.
- Stretch for 2 minutes while the toaster does its slow, suspicious work.
- Pull the cover straight. That’s a made bed, for now.
- Take one breather at the open window: in slowly, out a little slower.
- Write one line about today’s plan: “Dentist at 4. Bring the form.”
- Send a short hello to someone you’ve been meaning to call.
- Tidy the one chair that collects clothes. Just the chair.
Number 1 is the easiest to keep going. The glass can wait by the sink overnight, so the morning version of you only has to fill it.

In Yumemira the water goal counts glass by glass, and Add a glass is the whole morning job. Moving a coin from one jar to another does the same thing.
5-minute morning steps
Five minutes is about a song and a half. That’s enough to leave the house, or to stay in and finish a page.
If you have 5 minutes
- Walk to the corner and back. The dog will approve of this one.
- Read 2 pages of the book that’s been on the nightstand since spring.
- Step outside with your tea for 5 minutes, coat over whatever you slept in.
- Draw the mug in front of you. Badly is fine.
- Write for 5 minutes, anything at all, before you open email.
- Practise an instrument for 5 minutes, scales only.
- Work out for 5 minutes while the coffee brews.
- Plan the day in two lines: one must-do, and one thing you’re allowed to skip.
The anchor matters more than the clock. Your mornings might start at 5 am one week and 11 am the next.
And “after the first coffee” still works, whenever the coffee happens.
Attach the new step to something you already do.
10-minute morning steps
Ten minutes is a real block. It’s enough for one thing done properly, or two small halves.
If you have 10 minutes
- Tidy one surface, like the kitchen counter or the top of the washing machine.
- Read 10 pages, which is the Read goal’s full daily size.
- Take three breathers while you get dressed.
- Cook a real breakfast, even if it’s last night’s rice fried with an egg.
- Walk to a corner further away and come back.
- Learn 10 new words in the language you keep promising yourself.
- Put the phone in another room while you eat.
- Water the plants and check which one is sulking.
Most of these are easy to forget somewhere between finding your shoes and learning the bus pass is in yesterday’s coat. So the step needs to be visible.
But where?
In Yumemira, the small-steps journal for iPhone, a step you start stays on the Lock Screen. It shows in the Dynamic Island too, on iPhones that have one.
You can tap +1 glass or Done there without opening the app.
On paper, the same idea is a sticky note on the phone case. It looks silly. It works.
A longer morning routine list for 20 to 30 minutes
With 20 or 30 minutes, a goal fits at its full daily size and you won’t need to shrink anything. Here’s the rest, split by time.
If you have 20 minutes
- Walk for 20 minutes, the Walk goal’s full daily size.
- Do one language lesson, then say five sentences out loud to the fridge.
- Cook breakfast and pack the lunchbox while the pan is still hot.
- Stretch for 10 minutes, then sit with your tea for 10 more.
- Write 300 words of the thing you keep calling “my project”.
- Practise an instrument for 15 minutes, plus 5 to find the sheet music.
- Call a friend or family member on the way to the bus stop.
- Go outside for 20 minutes, even if it’s just the long way to work.
If you have 30 minutes
- Run for 20 minutes, three mornings a week. Walk on the other mornings.
- Do one 25-minute study block, then 5 minutes to make tea.
- Work out for 20 minutes, then take 10 to cool down and get ready.
- Iron the week’s shirts with the radio on, then hang them where you’ll grab them.
- Write for 15 minutes, then read for 15.
- Cook oats in jars for the next three breakfasts.
- Draw for 25 minutes, and spend 5 putting the pencils back.
- Sit for a 20-minute timed meditation, then spend 10 writing one line about the day ahead.
A 30-minute routine can mean getting up earlier, and that’s its own project.
But even the app’s Wake up early goal has a busy-day size: get up when the alarm rings.
On a short morning, do the busy-day size.
Make tomorrow morning easier tonight
A morning routine is mostly decided the night before.
A glass by the sink and a coat on the chair save you two choices at the hour you’re worst at choosing.
That’s most of what a calm morning routine feels like from the inside. Fewer things to decide before the coffee.
| If tomorrow’s step is… | Tonight, set out… |
|---|---|
| A glass of water | “Glass upside down by the sink.” |
| 2 pages | “Book on the coffee jar, bookmark sticking out.” |
| A 5-minute walk | “Coat on the chair, keys in the pocket.” |
| One line about the plan | “Notebook open on the table, pen in the fold.” |
| 10 language words | “Phone on charge, the lesson already open.” |
Put tomorrow’s step where you’ll see it first.
A 30-day challenge plan keeps one step small for a month. And for a line to go with it, morning journal prompts fit the same 2 minutes.
If you’d rather have the step waiting on your phone,
try it in Yumemira.
Tomorrow the dog will still decide when the morning starts. The glass will be ready when it does.
Questions people ask
What is a good morning routine?
A good morning routine is one you can keep on your busiest weekday. It usually starts with one small step, like a glass of water or 2 pages of a book, done right after something you already do. After a week, a second step can join it.
What should be on a morning routine list?
Two to four small steps, each sized so you can keep it. Two morning routine examples: a glass of water and a short walk, or a few pages and one line about today’s plan. Anything you skip three mornings in a row can come off the list.
What is a simple morning routine?
A simple morning routine is two small steps that fit in 10 minutes or less. For example, a glass of water, then 2 pages of a book with your coffee. It works best tied to something you already do, like making that coffee.
How long should a morning routine be?
As long as your real weekday mornings allow, which can be 2 minutes. A short routine you keep on busy days is more useful than an hour-long plan that only happens on Sundays.
